Our Portraits of change series presents insights from the lives of four community change-makers, who have brought their lived experience to programs of co-design with us and our partners, to send a mental health sector reform on the right path.
Lyanne Morel is dedicated to removing systemic barriers for marginalised communities, and has brought her own lived experience to help design a supported housing model for young people experiencing mental health challenges.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Lyanne.
I’m a survivor, a mother, a musician, and an advocate for meaningful change.
I have a deep love of music and art. I understand and appreciate the ability to express oneself through different applications.
What does a brighter future look like to you?
To me, a brighter future is where we see a stronger sense of community, where we are less judgmental of one another, and we help and support the people in our community when they are struggling.

How does strategic design help us get here?
Strategic design allows us to create, collaborate, and deliver on projects in such an efficient and inclusive way.
The ability to co-design with lived experience reveals a deeper layer of understanding when tackling presenting issues within the community.
What is one thing you want the world to hear?
If I could tell anything to the world, it would be to take a look at your vulnerable and marginalised communities, and think about what systemic barriers are preventing them from living a meaningful life. If we all took a moment to understand a day in the life of a person who the system constantly works against, I feel like that awareness can make progress in changing lives for the better.
