Yesterday

Most young people in crisis don't turn to professionals—they turn to their friends. But when friends want to help, they're left feeling overwhelmed and afraid of doing the wrong thing. There are plenty of tools for people in crisis, but almost nothing for the people trying to support them.

That's the problem Neami National, one of Australia's largest mental health organisations, set out to solve with RightByYou—a mobile-first website designed by young people for young people. Built for moments of urgency—after a cryptic text or worrying photo—the platform brings together evidence-based suicide prevention resources in a single, accessible space.

But translating a deeply sensitive issue into something young people could actually use required more than just information — it needed trust, clarity, and care.

Today

We partnered with Neami National to bring the RightByYou vision to life—not just as a website, but as a trusted companion young people could turn to in a moment of need.

Through a co-design process rooted in lived experience, we worked closely with young people, youth advocates, and suicide prevention experts to shape every part of the experience. This included partnering with Neami’s youth steering group of a dozen young people under 25 who guided the entire project with our team. Together, we developed a brand identity, tone of voice, and digital platform that felt clear, calm, and credible without overwhelming.

From QR stickers placed on lockers and notebooks, to mobile-friendly emergency pages and peer-led guidance, the design aimed to meet young people where they are—emotionally, culturally, and digitally. Every element was pressure-tested through stakeholder interviews, usability testing, and creative sprints to make sure it didn’t just inform, but empowered.

Tomorrow

RightByYou is now a go-to digital tool for young people wanting to support a friend. By changing the focus from the person in crisis to the friend who notices, it fills a critical gap in suicide prevention. Since piloting in Perth, Western Australia, RightByYou has become a national resource as it continues to scale across schools and communities, and has launched a youth ambassador program supporting its advocacy.

RightByYou demonstrates what’s possible when we trust young people with tools built for and with them.

“RightByYou is about relieving the pressure—not putting more on young people. It’s the resource I wish I had when I needed it most.” —Neeka Zand, Suicide Prevention Coordinator, Neami National
